Given that this is my first post on the blog, I wanted to start off by addressing a big misconception that I see many organizations have when it comes to the formula for organizational success. These days a significant amount of attention is being placed on things like organizational structure, strategic planning, collaboration, and innovation. We can add technological advances in there, as well.
While all of these factors are certainly important to the success of an organization, there are some fundamental basics that are getting lost in the shuffle. If you really want to survive and thrive, two things must be in place. It doesn’t matter what type of organization you run- whether it’s big or small, a business, non-profit, or even a government entity:
- First, there must be good communication, both within the organization and between the organization and outside entities. If you struggle to effectively and efficiently exchange information and ideas, if you struggle to define who you are, what you do, and what you stand for, then chances are you will also struggle to remain relevant.
- Second, you need to have the right connections. We’ve all heard the idea that “It’s not what you know but who you know.” This is not just a cute phrase. It’s the reality of how things get done, and it’s even more relevant today, when we are awash with information, contacts, unknown “friends” and “followers,” and a whole lot of other noise.
With effective communications and pivotal contacts in place, not only will your organization be more likely to succeed, but the truth is these factors are the springboard for all of the other concepts mentioned above. You simply can’t excel in your organizational structure, strategic planning, collaboration, innovation, or even introduce the right technologies, if your organization can’t communicate its core values and is not connecting to the right people or organizations.
Let me give you a few examples of what I’m talking about. I’m currently working with a variety of clients that have struggled in these two areas. The transformation they are now experiencing is phenomenal:
- For one non-profit, I’m helping them make the corporate and foundation connections they need to raise funds for their cause. These are connections they didn’t have before and would have spent a lot of time cultivating.
- Another client wants to expand his technology business to parts of Africa. I’m helping him make the right government connections in those countries and facilitating meetings so that his company will enjoy government support and reduced taxes.
- Yet another client is doing a transformation of their operations. I’m providing the change management strategy for communications and implementation. With change management, the vital factor for success is the organization’s ability to communicate effectively and encourage employees and other stakeholders to accept the changes.
- Finally, a start-up I’m working with needs investors. So, I’m making those connections and facilitating meetings.
Simply by improving their communications and making the right connections, I am helping these organizations take their operations to the next level.
